Practical Tips for Growing Your Substack Audience: Proven Best Practices from My Experience and Observations
Welcome to chapter four of Substack Mastery Book 🙌
Summary of My High-Level Strategy and Plan: How to Develop a Winning Content Strategy for Your Substack Newsletters
1 — I Found My Niche Topics, Defined Them, and Created a Strategy and Delivery Plan
Running any business without a clear strategy and plan can be challenging, especially in a crowded and competitive space. In the vast ocean of content creation, I quickly realized that honing in on specific niche topics was vital for standing out.
This focus allowed me to attract a dedicated audience who appreciated my unique perspectives and the experiences I brought to the table within those carefully defined areas.
My approach began with identifying topics that not only excited me but also matched my expertise. For me, it was essential to choose three niches that felt natural and genuinely sparked my passion — topics I could explore in depth and consistently provide valuable insights on.
This strategy wasn’t just about picking subjects; it was about crafting a plan that aligned with my goals and could sustain long-term engagement with my audience.
2 — I Tell My Personal Story in My Own Voice and Style
While I admire the stories and styles of many writers, I have learned the importance of telling my personal stories in my own voice and style. I try to find a better version of myself with pragmatic progress, refraining from perfection.
This approach is essential because sharing my journey allows me to connect more deeply with my audience. It humanizes my content, making it more relatable, memorable, and impactful for nurturing trust and loyalty.
I have chosen the idea of not shying away from sharing my struggles, successes, and everything in between. By weaving personal anecdotes with actionable advice supported by empirical evidence, I aim to create newsletters that are not only insightful and useful but also memorable and relatable.
My hope is that by using my own experiences to illustrate broader lessons, my stories will resonate with my readers in a meaningful way and perhaps inspire them to make meaningful changes in their lives.
3 — I Chose Consistency and Pragmatic Progress to Keep the Momentum
Consistency, combined with a practical approach that refrains from perfection, has become a cornerstone of my content strategy for a long time because it keeps my audience engaged and looking forward to my next piece.
Consistency builds anticipation and trust, which is crucial for maintaining a loyal following. I chose a publishing schedule that aligns with my lifestyle and commitments, ensuring I can deliver content without overwhelming myself or my readers.
To keep things fresh, I vary the topics and the frequency — sometimes weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly — depending on what feels right.
I use tools like calendar reminders and batch writing sessions to help me stick to this schedule, allowing for flexibility when needed. This consistent approach has proven valuable, helping me grow my audience and keep them engaged over time.
4 — I Experiment with Different Content and Styles to Offer Novelty
I have discovered that experimenting with different content and styles and adding novelty helps me find a better version of myself, keeps my audience engaged, and broadens my reach.
Experimentation with novelty adds a layer of freshness and excitement to the process, which is vital for sustaining long-term creativity.
Beyond my original content, I enjoy mixing things up by incorporating interviews, guest posts, Q&As, and even adding multimedia elements like podcasts or videos to create synergy and serendipity.
Seeing how other creators keep their content dynamic inspired me to explore various formats, and this approach has been rewarding. The variety sparks my creativity and enhances audience engagement, making the whole experience more creative, productive, enriching, and fulfilling.
5 — I Stay Authentic, Honest, and True to My Voice
I learned that originality and authenticity are key success factors for creators or other professionals. Therefore, striving for originality and staying authentic has been one of the most important aspects of my journey.
Authenticity resonates deeply with readers and is crucial for building long-term trust. I have realized that being true to my voice sets me apart in a crowded space. I write how I speak and don’t try to mimic others. My audience values my unique perspective even if they are presented without polishing. They appreciate the genuine voice behind my words.
I make it a point to let that authenticity and honesty shine through in everything I create. By staying true to myself no matter what ramifications my honest words might bring, I have been able to build a loyal following that connects with my content on a deeper level, which is something I prioritize with every piece I produce.
6 — I Offer Value Before Monetizing and Monetize Thoughtfully
This part of my strategy is a bit more nuanced because it is a topic often misunderstood on Substack. My approach has always been to give first, then receive. As a creator, earning income is essential to survive and thrive, but I have learned that focusing too much on revenue can be counterproductive.
Building trust and credibility with my audience was my top priority long before I even considered monetization. I wanted to ensure that what I offered my readers had real value before asking for anything in return.
I started by sharing valuable insights, tips, and stories for free, at least for the last five years. This not only helped me grow my subscriber base organically but also allowed me to establish a strong foundation of trust.
When I eventually introduced paid subscriptions a few months ago, it felt like a natural progression rather than something forced. I wanted any paid content to genuinely reflect the value I had already provided, making it feel like a fair exchange rather than a hard sell.
For those who chose to support me, especially my founding members, I offer exclusive content, deep dives, additional resources, personal consultations, and even support for their own endeavors, like promoting their goods and services if they align with my values and principles.
I have observed how some prominent creators balance free and paid content, and I have tried to emulate that balance in a way that stays true to my values. I always ensure that my paid offerings are genuinely worth the investment.
However, I feel like I made a mistake by not turning on the monetization, which delayed my growth unknowingly. Therefore, I believe it is important to turn on monetization on Substack right from the start to benefit from the algorithm.
This doesn’t mean everything needs to be behind a paywall — it’s entirely possible to offer all your content for free, even with monetization enabled. The key is to approach monetization thoughtfully, ensuring it aligns with the value you’re already providing and feels right for both you and your audience.
7 — I Collaborate with Other Creators to Create Synergy and Serendipity
Collaborating with other creators has been a game-changer for me. It is not just about expanding my reach; it is also about finding inspiration and support along the way. I make it a point to connect with other writers and creators, whether they are in my niche, in related fields, or in totally different areas.
Depending on my collaborators' needs, I engage in various ways. Sometimes, I contribute as a reader, offering feedback and support. At other times, I take on roles like editor or reviewer, helping to polish their work. I also promote their content within my own circles, which has proven to be a powerful way to support each other and grow our audiences.
Guest posts are another avenue I enjoy exploring. I either invite others to contribute to my platform or accept invitations to write for theirs. These opportunities allow me to reach new audiences and provide fresh perspectives.
One of the most effective strategies has been leveraging word of mouth. I have found that a referral program taps into my existing network and helps expand my reach organically. Collaborations and cross-promotions not only benefit me but also build a sense of community and shared success.
8 — I Use Quantitative and Qualitative Data to Refine My Strategy and Delivery Plan
Coming from both academic and business environments, I have known that tracking my progress was crucial. I have found that using both quantitative and qualitative data is key to making informed decisions. Without monitoring how things are going, it is hard to know if we are hitting the mark.
I analyze data to understand what resonates with my audience. This means looking at numbers like open rates, click-through rates, and subscriber growth, as well as paying attention to feedback and comments from readers. By regularly reviewing these analytics, I can see which posts are doing well and why.
This data-driven approach helps me fine-tune my content and strategy. If certain topics or formats perform better, I take notes and adjust my plan accordingly. It is all about finding out what matters most to my audience and making sure my content is always relevant and engaging.
By tracking the numbers and listening to constructive feedback, I continuously refine my approach to keeping my content fresh and aligned with my readers' needs, expectations, and aspirations.
Conclusions and Key Takeaways
Sharing these practices from my experience aims to illuminate how I have crafted a thriving and sustainable writing platform on Substack and beyond.
My journey has been full of learning and evolution, marked by challenges and achievements. While I acknowledge there has always been room for growth, I am appreciative of the progress made and eager to offer insights that might benefit others on similar paths.
